All Alta stories start somewhere, and for Robbe Mayall, that story began in the fall of 2005 when he joined the Alf Engen Ski School at Alta Ski Area. A seasoned ski instructor, Robbe brought years of experience from teaching in Colorado and Oregon. But Alta was where he would truly make his mark—building a legacy defined by mentorship, passion, and a profound impact on the ski community.
From his second season at Alta, Robbe was already shaping the next generation of ski instructors. He believed that great instructors aren’t born—they’re made through support, guidance, and perseverance. New instructors at Alta quickly came to know Robbe as a mentor who sought them out, celebrated their successes, and helped them navigate challenges. For many, Robbe was more than a colleague; he was a guide, a coach, and a friend.
When Robbe was asked about his legacy, the answer was clear: mentorship. Even as he faced a terminal diagnosis, his thoughts turned to ensuring his influence would endure. Robbe understood that financial barriers often stood in the way of becoming a professional ski instructor, and he knew firsthand how transformative teaching skiing could be. In the final months of his life, he established the Robbe Mayall Ski Education Foundation—a testament to his dedication to helping others succeed.
Today, Robbe’s spirit lives on in the lives he touched, the careers he shaped, and the Foundation that proudly bears his name. His legacy is one of mentorship, inspiration, and the unwavering belief that skiing—and teaching—can change lives.
From all of us at the Robbe Mayall Ski Education Foundation: Thank you, Robbe, for everything.
